Mark and Meredith have been self-employed potters since their business, Whynot Pottery, opened in 1982. The name Whynot was taken from the community that they live in: Whynot, NC. To reach Whynot Pottery, turn off Fork Creek Mill Road onto a scenic quarter mile driveway. On your left is a beautiful large pond. Don’t be discouraged by the length of the drive, when you finally come over the hill to the pottery you will be graced with a lovely view of more pasture and the back of a hill know as Needham’s Mountain. The Heywood’s commute to work is a short walk across the front yard and into the work building. Coffee mug in hand, they watch for deer or the occasional fox.
The pottery you will find in the sales shop is a wide variety of shapes and color. Form and function go hand in hand. Mark has spent the last several years concentrating on the shapes of vases and large custom lamps. Some of these are carved and/or fluted, the designs meant to either catch the glazing or to channel the flow of the molten glaze during the firing. The care taken with detail shows in the finished product. Not only are the shapes lovely to look at on their own, but filled with flowers they are quite striking. Mark’s passion for shape stands out.
Meredith works on a smaller scale, though her work is no less significant. Her work also shows a flair for detail: including cruets, two person tea-pots, unusual jars and bottles, along with a variety of production pots.
