Potter/ Art Teacher/ Nature Lover: Laura Totten fell in love with pottery 20 years ago when she took a ceramics class at Meredith College in her hometown of Raleigh, NC. She went on to earn a BA in Studio ART/ART Education in 2000, and soon began teaching ART to elementary students. Her pottery making unfortunately took a backseat to having 3 children and a teaching career. Two years ago with encouragement from her awesome new husband, Tom, Laura was finally able to revisit her love for pottery. Laura uses her love for the beach and backpacking/camping as an inspiration for many of her functional pieces. She began producing and selling her handmade pieces out of her backyard shed in Leland, NC where she currently lives. This success led to the opening of Totten Pots Plus studio in Seagrove in the Spring/Summer of 2021. Laura loved taking day trips out to Seagrove when she was younger. Throughout the years, she would even pick out her own birthday presents from some of the many potteries she visited. Laura and Tom are so excited to be a part of an area with such a rich pottery history. Their store features Laura’s original pottery, 100% made by her with extreme attention to every last detail. The store also contains beautiful and unique furniture, wall decorations, lighting, hand blown glass, and handmade soap all brought in from Tom’s coastal furniture store, DDT Outlet located in Hampstead, NC. The furniture acts as a perfect display for Totten Pots Pottery, especially her expressive face planters, bowls, and mugs. When Laura is not teaching ART, she is spending every spare minute experimenting, researching and creating with clay. She loves when her functional pieces are enjoyed and incorporated into a person’s every day routine. She is now obsessed and can’t imagine not having pottery in her life. She will forever be a lifelong learner when it comes to the wonderful medium of CLAY.
