Cupp and Howe Pottery

Hannah and Stillman work with local clay to create functional and sculptural forms to be decorated by the atmosphere of the woodkiln. They began working together in their studio in Pittsboro, NC to fire the woodkiln Stillman built using brick mixed from local materials before starting their current journey building their pottery in Seagrove. They strive to use as much of the environment around them to create products that will be used everyday in homes to share their passions and identities with their customers.

Hannah creates functional forms covered with gestural and delicate lines intending to have a contrast with the harsher volatile surface the atmosphere of the woodfiring creates. When producing pottery, she uses abstracted imagery of flora in the background juxtaposed with more concrete or detailed recognizable plants in the forefront. The third layer of surfacing comes in during woodfire with wood ash and color variations affecting the images, referencing the aspect of warped and sometimes missing memory of the greenery around us. In relation to obscuring memory and drawing, gestural drawings of leaves become abstracted and there are small wood ash covered areas within the image that questions what used to be there and what is now in its place. Hannah uses functional ware as a meditative device; having familiar interactions with the object and its decorated surface.

Stillman makes functional pottery inspired by traditional Southern and English wares with his own modern twist, using local material to create his own clay and glazes. He utilizes a variety of slip decorations to enhance his traditional forms before completing his pieces. Stillman is currently experimenting with a variety of woodfiring techniques, searching for different surfaces the woodkiln can create. All these things put together lead to a very unique regional identity to each of the pots, they’re very Stillman and very North Carolina
