Matthew Kelly Pottery
Matthew’s journey into ceramics began in high school, where he discovered a passion for working with clay. At 16, he took his first job as a potter at two traditional Seagrove pottery shops, Holly Hill and JB Cole. After over two decades as a journeyman potter, he began creating his own work in 2013, embracing the challenge of developing a distinct voice in the rich tradition of Seagrove pottery.
Driven by a commitment to craftsmanship and innovation, Matthew pushes the boundaries of functional and decorative ceramics. He works primarily with local clays and glaze materials, forming elegant, purposeful vessels that are fired in electric, gas, and wood kilns. His process incorporates meticulous slip work and glazing techniques, resulting in pieces that reflect both tradition and personal expression.
Living and working in the Seagrove area, Matthew is dedicated to inspiring both potters and collectors through his process and finished work. His YouTube channel, with nearly 40,000 subscribers, offers an in-depth look at his techniques and studio life, becoming a vital platform for education and connection.
Matthew’s studio hosts seasonal kiln openings, where collectors can experience his latest work firsthand. He has exhibited at notable events including the largest home furnishings trade show in the world, the High Point Market, the Potters Market Invitational in Charlotte, the Catawba Valley Pottery and Antiques Festival in Hickory, and Seagrove’s Celebration of Seagrove Potters.
